Henry Jenkins is renowned for his criticism of the representation of fans in society. I am writing this from a hostel in Tanzania, so I am without the means to go into full depth. In his book Textual Poachers, he notes the destructive and negative stereotypes of fans in society, creating the impression of them as pathological. His contention, which I find myself largely agreeing with, is that fans are creative, intelligent, active members of society who are able to transform their passion for media texts into their own.

The below video reduces fans (especially young female fans) to mere animals with an inability to control their actions. Whilst I may also find screeching at a concert annoying, it is but a portion of the fan culture that is guilty of this loud sin.

I just find it fascinating!
